Saturday Morning Traffic ARRGH!
I am really going to enjoy my drive in to work tomorrow (and hopefully the drive home).
I have been in some kind of traffic time warp for the last two days. I knew the whole “Red River Shoot Out” was today, but I didn’t realize the impact it has on Dallas.
I have to drive A LOT for my job. Yesterday, I drove back into Dallas from Plano at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. I was driving in (typically takes me 30-35 minutes at that time) to do an admission. I calculated I could be back in my car driving home by 4:15 to avoid rush hour traffic.
I hopped onto 75, cruised a long and right as I passed 635….shrrrooomp. Standstill. WTF?? It took me 50 minutes to get to work. This delay caused me to leave work at 4:45. No problem, I thought, I would still be okay if I took the Tollway home. Wrong-o. I did not get home until 5:45.
On the way home, I called Ogre to tell him to pick up Mina. I also told him we wouldn’t be eating dinner in Dallas because the traffic was so crazy. That’s when he clued me into TX-OU weekend. I thought really? It’s causing a traffic jam at 3 in the afternoon, I wasn’t too convinced until he told me there were 16,000 new seats and half are occupied by Oklahoma fans.
Well, this morning I had the pleasure of driving into work at about 8am and I guess this is when everyone decided it was time to drive to Fairpark. It might has well have been Monday morning. Except more entertaining. I wish my camera weren’t busted so I could share some of the sights. You’ll just have to visualize.
People get rabid. Half the cars had those flags clipped onto their windows. One guy had one on EVERY window. AND A MAGNET on his car door. I could hear it now… “Honey?!! Have you seen my OU car magnet?? I need it for the game.”
And another guy whining, “You didn’t wash my jersey! It’s my lucky shirt, we won’t win if I’m not wearing it!” He sniffs it, “I’ll just wear it anyway.” Throws it on and smooths it down with his hands.
Here’s the last guy, “I can’t find my foam finger! Honey, you didn’t throw away my foam finger, did you?”
The guy that my eyes widen the most was the guy standing in the bed of the pick up truck driving (or should I say sitting on I-35 South) holding a huge Texas Longhorns flag. I guess he wanted to make sure we knew they were their biggest fans, in case the car magnet, flags, and jerseys didn’t clue us in!
Oklahomian and visiting Longhornites, thanks for spending money in Dallas and I hope you had a good time, but I hope you headed home tonight so that you don’t screw up my normally quiet, easy drive home tomorrow morning.
I actually am a Longhorn. A Longhorn without school spirit. (Sorry, Lori, I know you’re disappointed.) I asked Ogre just now if Longhorns “say anything.” You know, like Aggies say “whoop”? He told me they say “Where’s the Beer?” Smartass.
45-35! WHERE’S THE BEER??!!
Oh Grace! How can you not have school spirit when you went to such an awesome school?!?! Wanna trade? We have enough Longhorn spirit for you and neither of us went there! haha! Oh…and we were one of those idiots sitting in the parking lot on the Tollway/35/30 Saturday morning and afternoon. I thought I was going to die if we spent ONE MORE SECOND in the car. It took us over 2 1/2 hrs to get somewhere that normally takes 30 mins. At one point I thought we were going to miss the game and I made Aaron get off the freeway and take streets! There was no way I was missing the biggest game of the year
Wow!! Actually, I think it would be really cool to go to a game like that. I’m sure the energy is incredible, but I would be considered one of those fair weather fans, which I’m not a fan of and I don’t ever want to not be a fan of myself. Whew! That was a lot of fanfare! Glad you got to be part of what I heard was a truly great game!
